They’re Ugly!™ is a virtual flower delivery service for those who are looking for a less cheery gift. Users can send these horrible gifts to your loved ones or your enemies. The recipient will receive a one-of-a-kind bouquet of unattractive flora that the recipient can keep “alive” through attentive care. (For those looking for a more “appealing” experience you might want to head over to “They’re Beautiful!“.

Colophon

Many things went into the construction of They’re Ugly! Here’s a few:

  • They’re Ugly! is built using Ruby on Rails, MySQL, Apache, eye of newt, toe of frog, wool of bat, and tongue of dog (with apologies to W.S.).
  • They’re Ugly! strangely resembles another site we built that’s completely unrelated called They’re Beautiful!
  • The site is hosted by the folks at SliceHost
  • Each of the flowers that make up the ugly bouquets was made by hand out of paper. All the flowers were scanned to create the bouquets you see on the site.
  • This site was originally going to contain beautiful plants and flowers but the economic downturn made everything unattractive.
  • The style of the flowers was inspired by Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas (with a dash of Little Shop of Horrors).
  • Just because these virtual flowers seem great for Halloween, doesn’t mean you can’t send them year round.
