Startups Being Cheap

“Recently the cost-cutting drive reached a new extreme. ‘We drink a lot of coffee,’ says Mr Morin, describing late-night, caffeine-fuelled coding sessions. ‘I used to get the good whole bean stuff from a little cafe and grind it myself. Now we get the big bucket of Folgers.’” [use this link if they ask you to register]

“The game makers noted that it had almost no difference compared to another game released with DRM, showing that adding the DRM did absolutely nothing to prevent piracy.”

All Cloud Startup Infrastructure

“And yet, despite the fact that we have the resources to build out our own footprint, we are choosing to go the other way, and move 100% into the cloud. This decision came after a lot of modeling and some very hard thinking.”

Alternative Band Business Models

“Rather than going out and signing a record label deal, where the record label basically gets near total control over the band and its works, the band has incorporated itself into a company and raised $100,000 from The Normative Music Company as an investment.”

Monsters Inc. Ride at Tokyo Disneyland

“Monsters Inc Hide and Seek is the next major Disney attraction, and it will open officially April 15, 2009 at Tokyo Disneyland Tomorrowland. A real E-Ticket with new WDI technological wonders, and more than 75 Audio-Animatronics inside. In fact, since Pirates of Caribbean at DLP or Sinbad Voyages at TDL, no other attraction had been built with so many Audio-Animatronics… No need to say that Disney and more is waiting for its opening…”

M.U.L.E.

ZOMG, just when I thought I’d seen everything the internet currently had to offer, this has been around for three years (or so it appears). M.U.L.E. is one of my favorite games ever. I’m almost afraid to play it again for fear of ruining my golden memories. I once asked the guy running the XBox games group at Microsoft to remake this. He agreed it was a good idea, but never acted on my suggestion. He was soon out of a job.

Star Wars Aesthetic

Personally, I’ve always thought that the difference between the Star Wars and Star Trek aesthetic was simply the amount of money spent on both sets that look real, and extras to populate them. Star Wars locales looked real and felt like they were filled with realistic numbers of people. It was all about scale. This was in stark contrast to Star Trek where planets looked like some weird pseudo Mount Olympus where 400 people inhabit the entire place.
