Empire State Building

I have a fascination with Art Deco architecture and design. I am specifically in love with Office Buildings created in this style. While I don’t remember specifics, I imagine that I must have once as a kid gone into the Empire State Building — a treasure trove of Art Deco office building goodness. But I honestly don’t remember. In New York City a few weekends ago we made it to the Empire State Building around 1 am, just before it was closed for visits to the observation deck. I was blown away.
It’s true we’re embryonic right now, but I don’t think it’s too early to start planning the lobby of the eventual Jackson Fish Tower.

Yeah, I had the same experience on a recent trip to NYC, and the same reaction to the lobby — but, I went at 10pm, when people filled the lines in your last photo. 1am is *much* smarter.
It’s funny… the Amazon HQ (the former veteran’s hospital here in Seattle) and the building is a gorgeous Art Deco complex. You walk in the lobby and it’s like a tiny mini-version of the lobby pictured above. But five feet beyond the lobby and it turns into standard (circa 1980) office building decor. Disappointing. I wish they built more modern buildings with the level of detail above.
You should take a walk across the street to the Exchange Building on 1st and Marrion (actually enter on 2nd). Nice details in the lobby and elevators, but same sad story as the Amazon HQ. Once you exit the elevator it looks like Herman Miller threw up (at least on my floor).
